The Ipswich Society(0076w) Panoramic view of Ipswich 1970sA northerly view of St Matthews St following redevelopment in the 1960s. The row of new shops on the north side of St Matthews St runs from from the Berners St roundabout on the left to the St Georges St junction on the right. During the 1980s tests elsewhere in the UK showed weaknesses in concrete using a type of high alumina cement. This had been used on the buildings in this view and as a precaution, the upper levels of the new buildings at the Berners St end were removed and the single storey flats over the row of ships were no longer used. The roof of Tescos supermarket (now QD in 2014) can be seen in the right foreground. Most of the buildings on the south side of St Matthews St from Tescos to the roundabout on the left have since been replaced. Howes garage in St Georges St (behind the new shops) has been recently replaced by new housing (2014). This collection donated by the Wade family.
