Exterior view of the Washington Irving Branch Library, 1803 South Arlington Avenue, designed by Allison & Allison, architects, and built in 1926 in Romanesque Revival style. It is Los Angeles Cultural Monument. Its materials included hollow tile, brick, and stucco. It has a rectangular plan with side-facing gables, a symmetrical front elevation, a tiled roof and a bay window on the east side. Its approximate cost was $25,000 and it opened to the public on December 15, 1926. The new Washington Irving Branch, 4117 West Washington Boulevard, opened in 2000, and the old branch on Arlington Avenue has been vacant, boarded up, and fenced for many years.
