Exterior view of the Governor John Gately Downey estate, located at 345 S. Main St. In addition to serving as governor for two years, Downey was the founder and first president of Farmers and Merchants National Bank. The city of Downey was named in his honor after he subdivided his land holdings there and converted them into farms. In 1894 he died in this house at age 64.
