It was opened in 1891 along with the almost identical Museum of the History of Art located opposite and in appearance. The construction order was given by Emperor Franz Joseph I as part of the expansion of the city in 1858. Both museums were built in the style of the Italian Renaissance, designed by Gottfried Semper and Baron Karl von Hazenauer.
