Holy See (Vatican City State) > Vatican CityVatican courtyard of Pinia with a column of the Vatican Council (in honor of the First Vatican Council of 1868-1870). Behind is the ancient bronze Cone (Italian pine) after which the courtyard is named. The column with St. Peter was made around 1870 (bronze statue by Filippo Gnaccarini) and was intended to be placed on the high Roman hill of the Janiculum. But due to the unification of the Papal State in 1870 with the rest of Italy, it was placed here in 1885. The monument was dismantled by order of the Pope in 1936, while the statue of the Apostle Peter was placed on a small pedestal in the Vatican gardens approximately in the geographical center of the state. (The photo was in the 1907 edition)
